This is a photo from this summer’s inclusion project in Rankovce, Slovakia, taken by me with the sun in my eyes. 

I think what this picture illustrates perfectly is the racial injustices minorities face due to systemic prejudice and racism. The two people holding the ends of the broom represent society—they control people’s chances of success. They lower the broom for people of colour, for women, for disabled people, children from low-income families, and queer people. It is possible for the discriminated to get to the other side, to bend sufficiently without falling, but it is much more difficult for them to do so. However, society can metaphorically make the broom go higher–adjust and make it easier for those of all backgrounds to get to the other side–to a better and happier life.
